Rory McIlroy forced to miss Mayweather-Pacquiao but WGC win leaves him feeling just champion

By Tim Dahlberg

With ringside seats selling for up to €35,000, no wonder the front row at the Fight of the Century was crammed with wealthy celebrities in Las Vegas.

One who didn't get the chance to use his ticket was Northern Ireland's own Rory McIlroy, who was instead winning golf's WGC Match Play championship.

Singer Beyonce nearly stole the show - her ultra-low-cut red pants suit caught all eyes as she arrived with husband Jay-Z to see the Mayweather-Pacquaio bout.

Five years in the making, the welterweight fight was also watched by stars including Clint Eastwood, Nikki Minaj, Sean 'Puffy' Combs, Michael Keaton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Donald Trump. Other famous faces included tennis stars Steffi Graf with husband Andre Agassi and actors Claire Danes and Robert De Niro

The worldwide TV audience and the crowd in the MGM Grand Arena on the Las Vegas Strip had to wait after the fight was delayed by about 30 minutes because cable and satellite systems were having trouble keeping up with the pay-per-view demand.

Both fighters were guaranteed staggering paydays, with winner Floyd Mayweather pocketing €160m, while Manny Pacquiao collected €110m.
