Twitter hysteria over Carl Frampton's weight rings hollow
I cannot remember the last time a boxer felt the need to apologise for not making the agreed limit for a non-title fight, but that was the case with Carl Frampton yesterday - before last night's late cancellation of the bill.
Social media is so often the place where logic, reason and humility go to die and so it was when Frampton was a pound over the 9st limit for his WBC World title eliminator with Andres Gutierrez at Belfast's SSE Arena.
Twitter exploded with some so-called fans comically suggesting that it was "tactics" by Frampton to miss the weight because he didn't want to fight Gary Russell Jnr, the holder of the WBC World featherweight title. There were also those who are always waiting to be offended, claiming that because it wasn't an eliminator they would not be getting value for money!
The fact that Frampton didn't make the weight did not take away from the fact that the public were still in for a clash between two fighters ranked in the world's top 10.
Furthermore, the World Boxing Council confirmed that the fight would go ahead as an eliminator for Gutierrez only and there was no suggestion that the Belfast man's ranking as the number one rated challenger for Gary Russell's belt would be in jeopardy.
Also, Frampton's clearest route to a World title fight is obviously IBF champion Lee Selby, a fight that would also be more lucrative than a clash with Russell.
It is also noteworthy that the Jackal is ranked three by the IBF and a victory would have probably pushed him into their mandatory position.
