Steven Ward survived a bloody battle with Liam Conroy at the Ulster Hall last night to pick up the WBO European light-heavyweight title.
Ward hit the floor in the fourth round having earlier suffered a nasty gash over his left eye. The accidental head clash led to the doctor ordering the 10-rounder to be stopped in the eighth round and so the decision went to the scorecards, with the Monkstown man handed a unanimous decision of 76-75 by all three judges.
"I'm delighted to get the win. It was a big step up for me and I had to dig deep. I proved to myself what I can do because I did get caught with some good shots," said Ward.
