Capello was fab after all

By Steven Beacom

After Northern Ireland lost to Russia at Windsor Park in August, I asked Fabio Capello (below) if he feared getting the sack should the campaign unravel for his team who had just lost their second qualifier in a row.

The Italian was gracious in his reply saying he wasn't worried as he was certain that Russia would reach the World Cup finals.

The former England coach virtually guaranteed it there and then. He was proved right with Russia finishing top of our group ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.

Fair play Fabio. I'm still not convinced you are worth £8m a year, but if the Russians are willing to pay it, good luck to you.

Here's to Russia drawing England in Brazil. Capello would relish that one.
