Stage set for Martin O'Neill to manage Republic of Ireland

By Steven Beacom

It's goodbye to Trap then. Giovanni Trapattoni's time as Republic of Ireland manager is up.

Across the border the Italian legend has come in for serious criticism for his cautious approach, but let's not forget he took the worst Republic of Ireland team for years to the 2012 European Championship finals.

Agreed, they were rubbish in the tournament, but at least they got there.

If their new boss is Martin O'Neill, who everyone on this side of the border thought would one day manage us, you just know that the Republic will draw Northern Ireland in the Euro 2016 qualifiers. Should be interesting.
