The Punter: Classy Dabirsim worthy of early look
Ante-post betting is rarely recommended as so much can go wrong before a selection gets to the starting gate.
But an exception must be made for Sunday's impressive Prix Morny winner Dabirsim for next year's 2000 Guineas.
Ridden by Frankie Dettori for young French trainer Christophe Ferland, he romped home an easy three lengths winner in a good field which included the highly-touted Frederick Engels who had no luck in the Phoenix Stakes two weeks earlier.
Engels was reported to have coughed prior to the Deauville Group 1 race and that would explain his lack-lustre show. However, even at his best, he would have been hard pushed to beat what looks like being the best two-year-old this year.
Dettori's recommendation was to go for the Middle Park Stakes next at Newmarket in October but the trainer has not entered the horse and prefers to keep him at home for a race on Arc day at Longchamps.
Dabirsim is quoted at 16-1 by William Hill (12-1 with others) and that's a big price for a horse who is bred to get a mile, being by Hat Trick, a top miler in Hong Kong. Dabirsim's dam is Rumored who was by Breeders' Cup mile winner Royal Academy.
If this horse was trained by Andre Fabre or any the other leading French trainers, he would be half those odds for the Guineas. And that may be the case if he wins again at Longchamps.
