The Punter: Graeme McDowell is my choice for BBC award

An Ulster sports star should win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award later this month.

But will it be Tony McCoy or Graeme McDowell?

If you are guided by the bookies, then it will be champion jockey McCoy, winner of the Grand National for the first time on Don’t Push Me, and currently heading the market at 5-6.

McDowell is second favourite at 9-2 and being the first British golfer to win the US Open in 40 years, and the man who put down the winning putt in the Ryder Cup, gives him a very strong chance.

Unfortunately, none of the golfing exploits were shown on BBC but the Grand National was. Whether that influences voters on the night, remains to be seen.

All racing fans and many throughout sport would love to see Tony succeed but my feeling is that it’ll be Greame doing the celebrating.
