The Punter: I’d lean to Arlene to keep hold of new role

If ever the maxim of a week being a long time in politics had veracity, it revealed itself in its true glory in the last seven days in the midst of the biggest political story to hit the province since the start of the Troubles.

Sex, scandal and alleged financial irregularities, makes for a heady mix with the potential fallout showing no signs of abating.

Who would have believed that Iris Robinson would be out of public life and husband Peter left fighting for his political survival as leader of the DUP and First Minister?

The odds against such a revelation unless you were on the inside of the BBC’S Spotlight production, would have been astronomical.

And now the layers have wasted no time in dipping their toes into the murky waters by opening up a market on who will be First Minister on March 1.

Surprisingly, Paddy Power make Peter Robinson 5-4 favourite to return and maybe their political antennae are more astute than most.

However, the political sand is quickly shifting under Peter’s feet and he faces a tough task in his bid to retrieve the situation in six short weeks.

That makes the incumbent and very able Arlene Foster (4-1) outstanding value, although don’t be surprised to be hit with limited stakes.
