The Punter: Schumacher has drive to succeed yet again

Michael Schumacher returns to the fast lane of F1 racing next year and he has to be a strong contender for the world drivers’ championship now that he had teamed up with Mercedes.

He has signed a one-year deal with the renamed Brawn team which steered Jenson Button to the title this year.

Often it is said that ‘they never come back,’ but Schumacher is a different kettle of fish.

He wouldn’t entertain the idea unless he felt he had a serious chance and he is quoted at 9-2.

Still only 41, he retired in 2006 and jettisoned the idea of returning last year, probably to concentrate on his fitness.

In his latest interview, it was clear that the energy and determination are back. He will have done his homework and knows he’s with the right team to make a serious bid.

Schuey is ‘level you devils’ (evens) to beat Button in a match bet and 13-8 to finish ahead of Lewis Hamilton who is the 11-4 market leader to regain his crown.

However, that even money to outdo Button makes maximum appeal.

There is quite a difference of opinion among the layers as to what Schumacher will achieve in his comeback.

Paddy Power go 15-8 that he will win five or more races but Hill’s are much bigger at 7-1!

Also, Hill’s are 3-1 that he will win no races next year while PP are much bigger at 11-2. Compare that with Bet365 who are a miserly 11-8 that the German does not add to his record tally of 91 races.
