Commonwealth Games: Calvert is only just off target in his quest for medal

By Frank Brownlow

Northern Ireland's David Calvert last night said he was pleased with his performance despite just missing out on a medal. Calvert finished fourth in yesterday's full bore rifle Queen's Prize event.

The 63-year-old, who has won eight medals in 10 Games appearances, missed out on another prize in heartbreaking fashion.

Calvert was just one point outside the medal places on 393 while fellow Northern Ireland shooter Jack Alexander was fifth.

"The conditions were challenging but I'm happy with fourth and that Jack Alexander was fifth," said Calvert. "It obviously isn't a medal but it was a pleasing performance and it is my third time getting a fourth place position in the Commonwealth Games."

England's David Luckman won his second gold of the Games in the event, scoring 401.

The 38-year-old added to the pairs gold he had won with Parag Patel, who claimed individual bronze.

Jim Paton of Canada took silver, four behind Luckman and three ahead of Patel.
