Australia bite back with three England wickets

Hosts make a stuttering start to reply at The Oval.

England made a stuttering start to chasing 215 in the opening one-day international against Australia at The Oval.

Off-spinner Moeen Ali claimed three for 43 as the tourists were bowled out for 214 but the hosts then lost three quick wickets as they slipped to 38 for three in the eighth over.

Jason Roy was the first to go to just the second delivery of the reply when he was late on his shot to a delivery from Billy Stanlake that nipped back on him and was bowled without scoring.

Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow then scored a flurry of boundaries before Michael Neser claimed his maiden one-day wicket when he trapped Hales on the back pad to have him lbw for five and leave England on 23 for two.

Bairstow continued to play freely as he went in search of a fourth consecutive one-day international century but he then pulled Kane Richardson straight to Travis Head at deep square leg and was caught for 28.

That left England in a spot of bother with Joe Root and Eoin Morgan need to put together a solid partnership to get the hosts back on track.
