Coleraine take scenic route to Twenty20 Cup semis

The Coleraine football team were not the only successful team from the town this weekend as the cricket side qualified for the semi-finals of the North West Twenty20 Cup.

The cricketers did it the hard way because they were deducted 10 points for attending the Irish Cup final on Saturday - they failed to turn up for their second group game against Strabane - but a seven wickets victory over Ardmore yesterday was enough to give them second place in Group A, behind Bready.

Ardmore, after batting first, needed to take at least eight Coleraine wickets to give themselves a chance of pipping the Bannsiders on run-rate but an unbeaten half-century from Stuart Campbell eased Coleraine home, for the loss of just

three with almost four overs to spare to complete the perfect weekend.

Bready shared the 25 points available in their final game with Strabane on Saturday, but the low-scoring (98) tie was enough for the Magheramason team to top the group, ahead of yesterday's game at Sandel Lodge.

In the final match in Group B, there was a surprise defeat for Brigade who had won both their games on Saturday but as they were enough to ensure they progressed to the last four with Donemana, they could afford to take their foot off the gas yesterday and Fox Lodge took advantage.

Professional Cebo Tshiki top scored with 52 in Bready's 132-4 and with slow left armer Adam Boyd taking four wickets they inflicted a first defeat of the season on Brigade by five runs.

Instonians' game at North Down was the only Robinson Services Premier League game played on Saturday and the good weather is too late to save two of today's first-round games in the Lagan Valley Steels Twenty20 Cup.

Carrickfergus v CIYMS will now be played on Thursday while Muckamore v North Down is also off today.
