Deadly McBrine helps Donemana past bowl-out

By Ian Callender

Donemana will be in the draw for the quarter-finals of the Bank of Ireland Senior Cup on Thursday, but only thanks to three accurate bowlers after their first round tie against Eglinton was decided by the dreaded bowl-out.

But there was no luck for Brigade, beaten by the cup holders in three successive finals from 2012, as they missed with all five attempts and lost 1-0 to Championship side Ballyspallen.

In all, five of the seven ties yesterday failed to reach a conclusion on the pitch, but the favourites won the other games, with Bready and Ardmore also winning 1-0 against Bonds Glen and St Johnston respectively, while justice was also done at Coleraine where the home side had reduced Drummond to 44 for six when rain prevented any further play.

David Cooke and Steve Lazars were then on target as the league leaders won the bowl-out 2-1.

The real suspense, however, was at Eglinton, where only 10 overs were played — Eglinton were 30-0 — and Donemana, who are chasing a record-equalling sixth successive Senior Cup success were forced into a bowl-out. Andy and William McBrine were both dead-eye for the holders, and Dwayne McGerrigle made sure for a 3-1 success.

In the two games that were completed between the showers, Newbuildings won the all-Championship clash against Glendermott by seven wickets with almost 28 overs to spare, as Piet Salmon hit 72 not out from 29 balls with seven sixes and four fours! Elsewhere, Fox Lodge knocked out Killyclooney.

Brigade’s first round defeat, their earliest cup exit since 2009,  completed a miserable weekend for the Beechgrove side who crashed to a six-wicket loss to Premiership title rivals Donemana.

The champions, set 175 to win in 34 overs, won with eight overs to spare, leaving Brigade 24 points behind Coleraine, who extended their lead at the top over Donemana to five points with an eight wickets win over Eglinton.

At Newbuildings, Newbuildings (set 124 in 40 overs) beat Glendermott by 7 wickets (DLS):
