England chasing 271 to take 2-0 lead over Australia
England reach 169 for four with Root and Buttler at the crease.
England were eyeing a 2-0 series lead over Australia as they pursued 271 in the second one-day international against Australia.
The tourists showed admirable control with the ball to keep their hosts to 270 for nine after being asked to bowl first at the Gabba, and reached 169 for four after 30 overs.
That left them requiring 102 from 120 balls with Joe Root and Jos Buttler in charge of the chase following half-centuries from Jonny Bairstow (60) and Alex Hales (57).
Aaron Finch had earlier held the Australian effort together with his second consecutive century, 106 in 114 balls.
Root’s off-spin played an unexpectedly crucial role as he took two for 31 in seven overs, including the key wicket of Steve Smith.
