England reach lunch with Cook the only casualty
England made a promising start to their 1,000th Test match.
England lost only Alastair Cook in the first session after Joe Root chose to bat in their 1,000th Test against India at Edgbaston.
Cook fell to a wonderful piece of bowling by Ravi Ashwin, India’s only spinner here but brought into the attack for just the seventh over.
He struck in his second, bowling Cook with a perfect off-break which dipped in from round the wicket and then turned enough to beat the forwarddefence and take the off bail.
Cook’s opening partner Keaton Jennings had been dropped on nine off Ishant Sharma at fourth slip, by Ajinkya Rahane diving in front of his captain Virat Kohli at third.
But he then dug in alongside Root in an unbroken second-wicket stand of 57 as England reached lunch on 83 for one.
They had therefore made a promising start to this first of five Specsavers Tests in six weeks.
