England toppled for 196 after top order crash in Adelaide

England recovered from eight for five thanks to Chris Woakes.

England’s hopes of a one-day whitewash of Australia tumbled after a top-order collapse saw them dismissed for 196 in the fourth one-day international in Adelaide.

The tourists had targeted a clean sweep after going 3-0 up in the series but crumbled to eight for five as Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins ran riot on Australia Day.

Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Jos Buttler all made ducks in a calamitous start, but Chris Woakes hit a defiant 78 to lead a partial fightback.

England’s number eight hit five sixes and four boundaries as he put on half-century stands with Moeen Ali (33) and Tom Curran (35).

Australian paceman Cummins finished with career-best figures of four for 24, with Hazlewood finishing with three for 39.

Curran had replaced the injured Liam Plunkett in England’s XI, while Australia recalled Travis Head and Andrew Tye for Aaron Finch (hamstring) and Mitchell Starc (rested).
