Fired-up Brigade on course for Senior Cup success
Eglinton fought back to take four second innings wickets last night in the Bank of Ireland Senior Cup final, but Brigade still have a 132 runs advantage at the end of the first day at Bready.
And with first innings top scorer Johnny Thompson and Niall O'Donnell there to resume at noon today, and Andy Britton and David Murdock still to come, the Beechgrove side will be confident of bringing the Cup back to Beechgrove for the first time since 2010.
All the damage in their first innings was done in the last 25 overs when they blasted 179 runs, and with 28 left today, Eglinton could be chasing a huge fourth innings score. Murdock hit 49 from 39 balls with five fours and three sixes, and captain Britton hit four maximums in his whirlwind 50 not out from just 26 balls to follow Thompson's patient 57.
Britton was hit on the arm by Stuart Thompson in the penultimate over and bowled only three overs, but the strongest attack in the North West had more than enough in reserve.
Mark Simpson, in his eighth cup final, and Johnny Thompson each took three wickets - the former claiming the big wicket of professional Mike Erlank for just four - and the slow bowling of Jonny Robinson and David Barr chipped in with another trio as Eglinton were bowled out for 171 with 26 balls unused.
Jamie Miller provided the most resistance, and has so far made the top score of the final, but with wickets falling at the other end he could never accelerate and his 64 came off 84 balls.
Robinson is the leading contender for the champagne moment, a stunning catch at first slip to dismiss Ross Allen, and the off spinner then dismissed international Stuart Thompson in the first over after drinks.
Thompson and Allen shared the wickets last night but will need to follow up early and often today.
Meanwhile, Ballyspallen, the lone Ulster survivors in the Ulster Cup, will be at home to cup favourites Rush in the semi-final of the National Cup.
Co Galway host Limerick in the other game on Sunday, August 12.
