Instonians lead tributes as much-loved cricket writer David Holmes dies aged 54

Local cricket writer David Holmes has died aged 54.

A father of two, Holmes most recently reported for the News Letter but has also written for the Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life on the sport he loved.

Holmes played for Instonians before taking up cricket reporting after retiring from the game. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He also pioneered social media cricket reporting and could be found tweeting regular updates from all the matches @NCUCricketLive.

Waringstown player David Dawson said: “Holmsey always had a smile on his face. He was full of banter and was loved by all the NCU and wider cricket family. He will be sorely missed. I will be thinking and praying for his family and friends at this time."

Tributes have also been flowing in on social media since news of his passing broke on Monday morning, led by his club Instonians.
