John Anderson is handed an Ireland recall for UAE clash

By Ian Callender

John Anderson is the new face in the Ireland squad of 14 for the first Intercontinental Cup game of the season against UAE at Malahide next month.

The Merrion all-rounder replaces Alex Cusack in the one change from the original squad selected for this month's one-day international against England.

Max Sorensen was brought in for Tim Murtagh when the Middlesex pace man pulled out injured and he is again named on stand-by if Murtagh fails to make it this time.

As predicted in the Belfast Telegraph yesterday, Murtagh has been named in the squad but has missed the last two weeks with a hamstring injury.

Explaining Cusack's absence, chairman of selectors Alan Lewis said: "We've decided not to include Alex with an eye to the T20 series against Scotland and also the T20 World Cup qualifying tournament. Alex is such a vital player for us in the format and we've got to manage his workload accordingly."

Anderson won the last of his 13 caps in the three-match series against Scotland at the end of last year but missed out on World Cup selection.

With all the county professionals available for the four-day game, starting on June 2, Anderson is unlikely to make the starting XI but he has played three I-Cup games, making his career best 127 against the Netherlands in 2013.

"We are all delighted to see John back in the squad. He struggled with injury last year and perhaps also the hurt of not being selected, however his class was always there and his record proves it. He has come back even stronger this season which augers well for us," added Lewis.

The game will be Head Coach John Bracewell's first in charge, following his appointment at the end of last month, in succession to Phil Simmons. He was a member of the staff at the England game but only as an 'observer' with assistant coach Pete Johnston in charge on the day.

Ireland squad: W Porterfield (capt), J Anderson, A Balbirnie, G Dockrell, E Joyce, T Murtagh, A McBrine, K O'Brien, N O'Brien, P Stirling, S Thompson, G Wilson, C Young.

Northern Knights have named their squad for the three-day inter-provincial championship game against North West Warriors at Downpatrick starting on Sunday.

Waringstown youngsters Adam Dennison and James McCollum are both included with Nigel Jones, Gary Kidd, Mark Adair, Stephen Bunting and Allan Coulter all unavailable.

KNIGHTS Squad: A White (capt), C Dougherty, R van der Dussen, J Shannon, L Nelson, G Thompson, A Dennison, S Getkate, J McCollum, N Gill, J Cameron-Dow, P Eaglestone.
