Just two NCU sides survive to make quarter-finals

By Ian Callender

Irish Senior Cup holders Waringstown and Civil Service North will be the only two NCU teams in the quarter-finals after the union saw five teams bite the dust in the second round.

CSN by nine wickets against Balbriggan and Waringstown by eight wickets after bowling out YMCA for just 80 were the biggest winners of the day, while Strabane, the only North West survivors after the first round, won the closest game, beating Muckamore by one run.

The NCU side needed nine off the last over with three wickets left but professional Fahad Iqbal lost the strike for the last ball and needing a single to tie the scores and win on fewer wickets, the Red Caps completed their second run out of the over.

CIYMS was the biggest name to fall, 10 runs short of Merrion's 273 with skipper Nigel Jones' century in vain and Instonians crashed out to Phoenix despite a hundred on his debut by Murray Commins, while North Down and Carrick also lost.
