Metcalfe and Allen handed Wolves chance
Ollie Metcalfe, the 17-year-old Instonians batsman, and Eglinton slow bowler Ross Allen have been included in the Ireland Wolves squads for this month's series against Scotland A.
Allen is the one new face in the 13-player squad for the three-match 50-over series at Oak Hill next week, while Metcalfe and Rush opening batsman Nathan McGuire come in for the Twenty20 games the following week at the same venue.
Metcalfe has impressed at the top of the order for Instonians this season, and last weekend became the youngest player to score a century for the club, hitting 123 not out in the Irish Cup game against Cork County.
Allen, who spent the winter playing in Australia, has been surprisingly reduced to the role of 12th man by North West Warriors in both Interprovincial Cup games this season - although he opened the batting in the rain-interrupted Championship game against Northern Knights this week - but his consistency and control on Ireland Academy's pre-season tour was enough to earn him his first Irish call-up.
Talking about Metcalfe and McGuire, Wolves head coach Pete Johnston said: "Both are very clean ball strikers and this experience will no doubt help with their development."
There will be at least three changes to the Wolves side which stunned Bangladesh last month, with the selectors choosing a more developmental squad.
That means the experienced James Shannon and Simi Singh are left out, although Lorcan Tucker is named as wicket-keeper, so there is no place for Neil Rock.
Ten players are named in both squads, with Mark Adair, Metcalfe and McGuire replacing Stephen Doheny, James McCollum and Fionn Hand in the T20s.
Due to rain, there was no play in last night's White Horse Blast T20 ties. They will all be decided by bowl-outs.
