Northern Knights struggle for numbers

By Ian Callender

Northern Knights have been forced to name their team for next week's Newstalk inter-provincial Championship game against holders Leinster Lightning four days before the game – because they have only 11 players!

And they will go into the game with only three pace bowlers because SEVEN possible selections are either injured or unavailable.

The original 13-man squad was reduced to the minimum within hours of it being announced as Neil Gill (holiday) and David Simpson are unavailable for the three-day game at The Lawn, starting on Tuesday. Also ruled out, like Simpson, by work commitments, are Nigel Jones and Shane Getkate, while Mark Adair, Phil Eaglestone and Allan Coulter are all injured.

The Knights' new-ball attack will be debutants Stephen Bunting, the Instonians left armer, and Ballymena's Robert McKinley with Lisburn's Nathan Waller the only other seam bowler.

Meanwhile, yesterday's heavy rain led to the postponement of today's big Ulster Bank Premier League game between Instonians and North Down.

Teams: Northern Knights: A White (capt), S Bunting, J Cameron-Dow, C Dougherty, C Ervine, N Larkin, R McKinley, L Nelson, J Shannon, G Thompson, N Waller.

Leinster Lightning (from): J Mooney (capt), J Anderson, B Ackland, T Kane, B Coghlan, A Poynter, S Singh, A van der Merwe, E Richardson, F McAllister, M Sorensen, C McLoughlin.
