Ravi Ashwin aims ‘match-fixing’ jibe at Herschelle Gibbs on social media

Ravi Ashwin and Herschelle Gibbs traded blows on Twitter on Monday.

Ravi Ashwin made reference to Herschelle Gibbs’ involvement in match-fixing in a tetchy Twitter exchange between the pair on Monday morning.

India all-rounder Ashwin posted a tweet endorsing a pair of Nike trainers, to which former South Africa batsman Gibbs replied: “Hopefully you will be able to run a bit faster now ashwin”.

Ashwin’s response to that was to write: “Surely not as fast you did mate, unfortunately I wasn’t as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate.”

The tweet that Ashwin posted and then deleted

Gibbs replied: “Can’t take a joke I see anyway moving swiftly on..”

Ashwin then said: “I totally believed my reply was a joke too, but look how people and yourself perceived it. I am totally game for this sort of fun mate, we shall dine over this sometime.”

The tweet that mentioned match-fixing was then deleted, and Ashwin said: “What’s sensitive to me isn’t to someone else, and what’s sensitive to you isn’t to me. I want to respect my family of fans and hence pulled the tweet down, and now entertainment over for all my haters. See you later.”

Gibbs in 2000 was banned from international cricket for six months over his involvement in a match-fixing scandal involving a number of South Africa players on their tour of India.
