Root shares the joke after Kohli mocks his mic drop celebration

Kohli mocked Root’s celebration from the one-day series when the England captain was run out at Edgbaston.

Joe Root saw the funny side of Virat Kohli’s exuberant celebrations after being run out by the India captain on the opening day of the Test series at Edgbaston.

The England skipper was short of his ground following a marvellous piece of athleticism from Kohli, who collected the ball, turned and threw down the stumps in one motion.

Attention quickly shifted towards a jubilant Kohli, who blew kisses at Root and mimed his opposite number’s ‘mic drop’ celebration from the one-day series.

Root, though, was quick to play down any hint of antagonism in the gestures, telling the BBC’s Test Match Special before day two: “It actually adds to the theatre of the game.

“It’s good to have those little moments within things. I thought it was quite funny. I’m sure within the five-match series there will be plenty of that stuff going on. It adds to the whole drama of this series.

“I can’t see it becoming an issue throughout this game or moving forward, but it makes entertaining cricket for everyone to watch – which is exactly what you want in Test cricket.”

Root also said there were “no hard feelings” between him and Jonny Bairstow over the call which led to his dismissal for 80.

Root added: “It’s no-one’s fault in particular. You could probably say both were at fault. There’s no hard feelings between me and Jonny.”
