Simmons takes Afghan hotseat
Phil Simmons will be trying to prevent Ireland from reaching their fourth successive ICC World Cup finals at the qualifying tournament in March after being appointed head coach of Afghanistan.
Ireland's most successful coach - he was in charge from 2007-15 - was previously a consultant with the Afghans but from next week Simmons will be head honcho with his primary aim to get to the final of the qualifying tournament and take one of the two places up for grabs in the finals.
West Indies and hosts Zimbabwe will be favourites to qualify for England 2019, ironically the two other sides that Simmons has coached.
Simmons tweeted yesterday: "I am very excited to again have a chance to work with such talented cricketers. It's good to be a part of the @ACBofficials family again."
