Singh stars but Wolves are tamed

By Ian Callender

Simi Singh brought his match aggregate to 195 not out but his efforts could not prevent the Ireland Wolves losing their first three-day game of the month by nine wickets.

The Wolves were bowled out in their second innings for 252 to set Gloucestershire II a victory target of 213. It proved much too easy; they reached it in the 39th over with only Singh making a breakthrough as Craig Young 0-44 (off seven overs), Peter Chase (0-40 off eight), Nathan Smith (0-31 off six) and Shane Getkate (0-21 off two) were all put to the sword.

It was so disappointing after the Wolves had added 152 in the two hours before lunch but the loss of three wickets proved too many and the quick departures of Young and Chase after the interval left Singh stranded, having hit 11 fours and a six in his 122-ball stay.

The Wolves are back in action next week when Andrew Balbirnie is expected to return as captain against Scotland A at YMCA.

Meanwhile, the semi-finalists in the Lagan Valley Steels T20 Cup will be decided tonight in the final round of group games.

Muckamore are assured of a home draw as winners of Group A but if CIYMS and Waringstown both win, run rate will decide the winners of Group B.

A big CI victory will keep them on course for a memorable hat-trick of wins this weekend which would also see them become co-leaders of the Gardiner Bros Premier League and semi-finalists in the Irish Senior Cup.

Blocking their path are reigning league champions Instonians who are visitors to Belmont tomorrow and Sunday in what promises to be a fascinating double-header.

Scores: Ireland Wolves 330 (S Singh 107 not out, J McCollum 52) and 252 (62 overs, S Singh 87 not out, S Getkate 32, J Shannon 29, L Tucker 25; J Lintott 3-9) Gloucestershire II 370-9 (P Grieshaber 66, G Hankins 65; C Young 4-107) and 213-1 (38.2 overs, A Barrow 86 not out, G Hankins 54 not out, M Hammond 46). Gloucestershire II won by nine wickets.
