Stokes replaced by teenage debutant Curran in second Test

The all-rounder has a hamstring tear.

Ben Stokes was ruled out of the second NatWest Test with a hamstring tear and replaced by debutant Sam Curran.

The extent of England all-rounder Stokes’ injury was revealed in scans on his left leg on Thursday.

Left-arm seamer Curran will therefore face Pakistan at Headingley, two days before his 20th birthday, as England seek to salvage a drawn series from 1-0 down.

There were three changes in all for the hosts, from the team beaten by nine wickets at Lord’s.

Keaton Jennings replaced out-of-form opener Mark Stoneman in the squad picked on Monday, and England also preferred Chris Woakes to his fellow seamer Mark Wood here.

Joe Root’s team found themselves bowling first, after Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss under sunny skies in Leeds. The tourists made one anticipated change, debutant batsman Usman Salahuddin in for the injured Babar Azam.
