Downey and Teggart get their big break with ambitious Team Wiggins

By Gareth Hanna

Banbridge CC cyclists Mark Downey and Matthew Teggart will race for Team Wiggins in 2018.

Downey hit the headlines by winning three gold UCI World Cup medals and hitting the World No.1 spot in the points race. Former Banbridge clubmate Teggart, meanwhile, won a stage of the 2017 Rás, Ireland's biggest cycling event.

"I'm proud that Team Wiggins is now known as a top development team for young talent from the UK and abroad," said cycling legend Bradley Wiggins, the team owner.

"Team Wiggins has exceeded all expectations to date, and the 2018 crop of under 23 riders looks as exciting as ever.

"We had our first team get together with physiological testing last week in Liverpool where it was great to meet the team and talk through the 2018 plans.

"This is the next generation of cycling heroes, and I hope Team Wiggins will inspire more and more people to ride bikes."

Wiggins recently made his debut in competitive rowing, finishing 21st in the men's open 2km at the British Indoor Rowing Championships.

"I'm going to see how far I can take it, maybe a sixth Olympic gold?" said the 2012 Tour de France winner, referring to his rowing interest.
