Euro track event jets off to the Caribbean

The Caribbean will host the 2014 European Track Cycling Championships in Guadeloupe in October.

The event, which will take place from October 16-19, carries qualification points for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, so a full-strength Great Britain team could travel.

In 2010 it was held in Pruszkow, Poland, it has twice been held in Apeldoorn, Holland (in 2011 and 2013), while in 2012 it was in Lithuania.

Meanwhile, Marco Canola won stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia as the day's three-man breakaway managed to hold off the charging peloton in Rivarolo Canavese.

Canola (Bardiani CSF) beat fellow escapees Jackson Rodriguez (Androni Giocattoli) and Angelo Tulik (Team Europcar) as the sprinters' teams misjudged their finish and were unable to reel in the trio.

Nacer Bouhanni ( led the peloton in 11 seconds behind.

The general classification standings were unchanged as Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) retained the maglia rosa.

Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) is 37 seconds behind the Colombian ahead of today's mountainous 14th stage from Aglie to Oropa (Biella).
