Mark Downey outside of the medals at World Track Championships

Dromore man Mark Downey's hopes of a medal at the World Track Championships were ended on Sunday as Team Ireland managed a 9th place finish in the men's Madison event.

Downey had come into the championships hoping for a medal, but has come away empty-handed.

The 21-year-old finished Friday's points race in 11th place.

Downey was competing alongside teammate Felix English in the team event, scoring 11 points.

The race was won by Germany, with Spain and Australia taking second and third place respectively.

Mark Downey has already won three World Cup gold medals, but would have to triumph at the World Championships to be able to call himself a world champion.
