Arsenal and Athletico Madrid to answer UEFA charges

Both sides could be in hot water following their Europa League semi-final clash on Thursday night.

Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have been hit with UEFA charges following their Europa League semi-final first-leg clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Thursday’s game ended 1-1 as 10-man Atletico battled back to earn a draw courtesy of Antoine Griezmann’s late strike.

As well as seeing defender Sime Vrsaljko sent off inside 10 minutes, the visitors had manager Diego Simeone sent to the stands soon after.

Simeone has been charged with insulting a match official, while Atleti themselves will answer charges for improper conduct of the coach and throwing of objects.

The Argentinian is unlikely to be banned from the second leg as his hearing in not scheduled until May 4.

Arsenal had led through Alexandre Lacazette’s second-half header but face an uphill battle to reach the final in Lyon having been pegged back.

The Premier League side have been charged for the setting off of fireworks, with the case also to be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on May 4.

Marseille were victorious in the other semi-final, beating Red Bull Salzburg 2-0 in France, but also received two UEFA charges.

The Ligue 1 outfit will have to answer charges regarding the setting off of fireworks and the blocking of stairways.
