Atletico Madrid reach agreement with Monaco to sign Thomas Lemar

By Joshua Bunting

Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement to sign As Monaco's French international midfielder Thomas Lemar.

"Atletico de Madrid and AS Monaco has achieved a preliminary agreement over the transfer of Thomas Lemar to our club," read a statement released by Atletico on Tuesday night.

Lemar has scored 22 goals in 123 games for Monaco and helped them win Ligue 1 and reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2016-17.

He made his France debut in 2016 and has scored three goals in 12 international games.

Lemar is currently away on international duty with France and both clubs will be keen to finalise the transfer before the start of the World Cup, which gets underway on Thursday.

Lemar's potential transfer could have major implications for the future of compatriot Antoine Griezmann, who has been heavily linked to a move to La Liga rivals Barcelona

Greizmann said at a press conference on Tuesday. "Yes I have already made a decision about my future. But I'm not going to speak about it today.

"It's not the time or the place."
