Claudia Neto condemns Republic of Ireland to home defeat

Claudia Neto scored the only goal of the game 12 minutes from time as the Republic of Ireland rounded off their UEFA Women's Championship qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat in Dublin.

The Irish already knew they had no chance of reaching next year's finals in the Netherlands despite three group wins including a 2-1 triumph in Portugal in October.

Hopes were high when Aine O'Gorman headed against the crossbar in the opening minutes and the striker continued to threaten the visitors throughout.

But despite Ireland goalkeeper Emma Byrne saving Neto's 78th-minute penalty, the same player reacted to head home the rebound and seal victory.
