Andre Schurrle: Michael McGovern can be a Premier League hit
Michael McGovern is Northern Ireland's new French fancy. With the attention intensifying here at Euro 2016 as a result of his epic display in the 1-0 defeat to Germany in Paris on Tuesday night, Andre Schurrle stepped up to pay tribute to the goalkeeper.
Schurrle, who had a spell at Chelsea, believes McGovern can easily rub shoulders with the elite of the Premier League as a consequence of his tremendous international displays.
"I didn't know too much about him before but he played amazing, as did the Northern Ireland team," Schurrle admitted.
"They play with heart. They defend well and it is difficult to play against teams like that.
"Of course, I think so (McGovern coping with Premier League standards). When you come here and play on a stage like this and play great against the World champions, then you can play anywhere.
"We created at least six great chances and he did a great job with all of them."
O'Neill's men await the next stage of the France odyssey against Wales and Schurrle is glad they are now enjoying their moment after a third-place finish behind Germany and Poland.
"Teams like Northern Ireland deserve to qualify and you can see how difficult it was for us to play against them," added Schurrle.
"We were always confident but at 1-0 you always worry.
"To be honest, I have never experienced something like this with the Northern Ireland fans. There was a period when, on the bench, you weren't looking at the game you were just looking at the chanting Northern Ireland fans."
