Romania stay top as Keseru strikes again

Group F round-up

Romania striker Claudiu Keseru continued his impressive start in international football by scoring the goal that keeps his team at the top of their Europe 2016 qualifying group.

Keseru, who plays his club football in Qatar for Al-Gharafa, made it four goals in as many appearances with the only goal in their 1-0 win over the Faroe Islands in Bucharest.

He scored after 20 minutes as Romania made it four wins from five games and the only goal they have conceded was in a 1-1 draw with Hungary.

They did create a number of other opportunities, but an improved defensive display from the Faroes, who beat Greece in their last outing back in November, restricted them to just a single goal.

Romania remain a point ahead of Northern Ireland at the top of Group F, with the teams scheduled to meet at Windsor Park in June in what will now be a huge showdown.

Neither Hungry or Greece could muster a goal in their scoreless stalemate in Budapest.

While Hungary remain third in the group, with eight points from five games, Greece were unable to do their qualification hopes any favours as they picked up only their second point of the campaign.

Adam Szalai should have put Hungary ahead in the first half, but the towering striker nodded over the bar.

Nemanja Nikolic squandered a late chance to give the home side a victory when he fired over from close range.
