2020 Champions League final to be held in Istanbul

By Adam McKendry

UEFA have confirmed that Istanbul will host the 2020 Champions League final, while the Europa League final will be held in Gdansk, Poland.

European football's governing body UEFA announced the decision following its executive committee meeting in Kiev, the host city for this year's match between Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The Ataturk Olympic Stadium, the venue chosen by UEFA for the 2020 showpiece, witnessed one of the greatest ever Champions League finals 13 years ago.

Steven Gerrard inspired Liverpool's comeback from 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan to eventually prevail on penalties following a 3-3 draw after extra-time.

The stadium, which was built for Turkey's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games and holds just over 76,000, is located in the north west of the city and also hosts track and field events.

Meanwhile, the Europa League final will be held at the Stadion Energa in Poland, the home of Lechia Gdansk and a host venue during Euro 2012, which holds 41,620.

Other 2020 final venues include the Generali Arena in Vienna, which will hold the Women's Champions League final, and the Estadio do Dragao in Porto, which will play host to the Super Cup.
