Linfield Ladies to face European giants Ajax in Champions League

By Adam McKendry

Linfield Ladies have been drawn alongside Dutch giants Ajax in the Champions League qualifying stage.

The Blues will meet Ajax, along with Icelandic side Thor/KA and Wexford Youths, in the four team group stages that will be held in Belfast at Seaview in August.

Ajax are the reigning Dutch champions and as top seeds will be heavy favourites to win the group and progress to the last-32.

The Amsterdam-based team contain six members of the European champions Netherlands national team which faced Northern Ireland earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Thor/KA are the Icelandic champions having won the Úrvalsdeild kvenna last year, only the second championship in their history, while they also went on to win their domestic League Cup and Super Cup in April.

And Wexford Youths won't to travel far for their campaign, the Munster-based team earning their place in the tournament through their league victory last season.

The matches will take place on Thursday 7th, Saturday 10th and Monday 13th August - all of them will be held at Seaview.
