Mendes sweet on Everton hammering

Sporting Lisbon 3 Everton 0

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Pedro Mendes felt his side warranted their place in the last 16 of the Europa League as they saw off Everton 3-0 in the second leg.

The Premier League side were in the driving seat in Portugal thanks to their 2-1 win in the first leg, until Miguel Veloso broke the deadlock on the night in the 64th minute.

Further goals from Mendes and Matias Fernandez sealed progress for the Portuguese side to book a tie with Atletico Madrid.

“We needed this win,” said the former Rangers midfielder.

“We wanted to progress in this competition. I think we performed really well in the first leg, we were unlucky with the result.

“Today we did what the gaffer asked — patience. We knew we couldn't concede or it would be very tough for us.”

Everton were stunned just like they were last October when Benfica recorded a 5-0 victory.

And on a bad night for the Toffees, the only crumb of comfort came from the return of Phil Jagielka after 10 months out through injury.

But the defender could only watch as Veloso got clear inside the six yard area and from an acute angle drove a shot beyond Tim Howard and into the corner to open the scoring

Sporting went ahead on aggregate in the 76th minute through Mendes when his shot went in via a deflection from Jack Rodwell.

Fernandez then added a third in stoppage time.
