Van Dijk is an instant Kop hero

By Carl Markham

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk hailed a dream debut after his winner ensured the Reds defeated rivals Everton, 2-1, to move into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Van Dijk, the most expensive defender in world football after his move from Southampton in a £75m deal, headed in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's 84th-minute corner to decide a frantic Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Gylfi Sigurdsson had equalised after the home side went ahead through a controversial James Milner penalty after Mason Holgate pulled back Adam Lallana.

"What a night," said Van Dijk. "The goal is very special for me and my family. Playing at Anfield for Liverpool is a dream for every player. To score a goal is even more special."

At Old Trafford goals from Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku secured Manchester United a 2-0 win over Derby.
