Feet up for Fred: the Brazil midfielder to sit out Austria friendly

Fred suffered an ankle injury during a Brazil training session on Thursday.

Manchester United-bound Fred is unlikely to feature in Brazil’s final World Cup warm-up game in Austria, Brazilian media have reported.

Fred suffered a training ground injury on Thursday that Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar described as “trauma in his ankle”.

The prognosis of Fred’s injury has yet to be revealed, but the 25-year-old midfielder sat out Brazil’s final training session in London on Friday before the squad left for Austria.

Brazilian website Globo Esporte says Fred is unlikely to play any part against Austria in Vienna on Sunday – the South Americans’ final friendly before their World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 17.

United announced on Tuesday that they had a reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk to sign Fred on a five-year deal for a fee understood to be close to £50million.

Fred has made eight appearances for Brazil and made head coach Tite’s final 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia.
