Glenavon clinch the signature of ex-Northern Ireland star Clingan

Former Northern Ireland international Sammy Clingan has signed for Glenavon. The 33-year-old midfielder, who was capped 39 times, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Mourneview Park.

Lurgan Blues boss Gary Hamilton finalised the deal last night for the Belfast man who was released by Linfield at the end of last season.

He had an injury-hit spell at Windsor Park, playing just 11 games, after returning home from Scotland where he played for Kilmarnock for a number of seasons.

Clingan played for Hamilton's men in a number of pre-season games and will be a wise old head among the crop of promising youngsters coming through at the Mid-Ulster club.

Young striker Stephen McCavitt also joined the club from Banbridge Town, having also impressed during the summer.
