Heavy defeat leaves Republic's qualification hanging by a thread

Republic of Ireland Women's hopes of European Championship qualification hit a stumbling block as they succumbed to a 4-1 away defeat to Finland.

The hosts took the lead through midfielder Emmi Alanen on 32 minutes before Jenny Danielsson doubled their lead just before the break.

Finland made it 3-0 in the 70th minute with Natalia Kuikka scoring before the visitors pulled one back through substitute Stephanie Roche. A late Linda Sallstrom goal, though, capped off a convincing win.

The result leaves the Republic in third position in Group 2, six points behind their opponents in second and 12 behind leaders Portugal, relying on overhauling Finland for the runner-up spot.
