Liverpool are the champions of Europe for the sixth time.

Manager Jurgen Klopp ends his run of six successive final defeats in all competitions and has finally won the Champions League thanks to goals from Mo Salah and Divock Origi on a nervy night in Madrid.

Only Real Madrid and AC Milan have won the trophy more than the Reds.

There weren't even 30 seconds on the clock when Liverpool were awarded an early penalty for a handball on Sadio Mane's cross.

Mo Salah, who suffered injury heartache in the defeat to Real Madrid in last year's final, slammed home and, despite Spurs dominated possession for much of the game, the win was made safe by super-sub Divock Origi with just a few minutes on the clock.

Origi, who scored twice in the semi-final win over Barcelona, came off the bench to rifle low into the bottom corner - the one moment of real quality in the game - as Joel Matip did well to recycle a corner.

"I'm very glad to play the second final in a row and to play 90 minutes in a row," Salah laughed.

Liverpool were far from their best and that would have been a worry to many but the coolest man in the 30-degree plus heat was Virgil Van Dijk. A Colossus at the back.

He barely got out of second gear until he needed to, and then he produced one of those perfectly-timed sprints to dispossess Heung-min Son as he threatened to score.

Close behind him in the calmness stakes was Alisson Becker, who had nothing to do for 75 minutes before pulling off a string of saves to retain the lead and ensure a sixth European Cup headed home to Merseyside.

To a man the players sprinted to their goalkeeper, a £65million summer signing, at the final whistle to acknowledge the part he played.

It was far from a thrilling final like Liverpool's win over AC Milan in 2005 but the success will long be remembered for the stunning 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the semi-final second-leg, overturning a 3-0 deficit.

Liverpool lad Trent Alexander Arnold at 20 becomes the latest homegrown player to win the famous trophy with the club.

"It's hard to even put into words what's just happened," he said. "The run that we've had, we beat everyone in our path. We've probably been dominated for the main part of the game but I don't think any of us are even bothered about that.

"It's hard to think of myself as a legend. For me, I'm just a normal lad from Liverpool."

Tottenham were playing in their first ever European final.
