In pictures: The ecstasy, and then agony, of England’s World Cup semi-final match

There were wild celebrations, followed by plenty of tears, after Gareth Southgate’s heroes exited the tournament.

It all started so well for England, with their noisy fans enjoying the atmosphere ahead of the semi-final against Croatia in Moscow.

And they were rewarded with a superb goal from defender Kieran Trippier.

At that point, football was certainly coming home, and the fans certainly believed.

It wasn’t just the fans in the stadium who were dreaming of the World Cup final, it went crazy back home in England.

It was all going so well at half-time, with England just 45 minutes away from their first World Cup final since 1966.

But then disaster struck, as Croatia equalised, taking the game to extra-time.

England fans back home started to get worried.

And it got worse. Croatia scored the winner in extra time.

Mario Mandzukic’s goal left England fans back home in despair.
