An absolute legend: Northern Ireland players pay emotional tribute to 100 cap Julie Nelson
Julie Nelson will become the first ever player to pick up 100 caps for Northern Ireland's ladies team when she takes to the Shamrock Park pitch against Slovakia tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).
The centre-half, affectionely known as the Big Girl, has made 99 international appearances since making her debut way back in 2004 and since then has impacted the careers of many of her team-mates while helping to shape the women's sport across the country.
Now working as a women's football ambassador with the Irish FA, Julie has a direct hand in progressing the next generation of international footballers and it's clear to see just how much her advice is appreciated.
Her team-mates have paid this tribute to the Crusaders Strikers defender ahead of her landmark night:
🎥 @julesnelson5 is a legend, leader & inspiration. Not our words but those of her team. Join us on Tuesday night in our final @FIFAWWC as she becomes the first Women to reach 💯caps! 💚😢 #Nelson100 #GAWA pic.twitter.com/GZxFNXGiLg— Northern Ireland (@NorthernIreland) September 3, 2018
Nelson, at 33, has a wealth of experience in the game, having played for Everton in the top division of English women's football and reached with quarter-final of the Champions League with Glasgow City.
