Balde and McKiernan lead the way as NI beat Scots in Victory Shield
Northern Ireland U16s 2-1 Scotland U16s
Northern Ireland picked up the first win of their Victory Shield campaign by overcoming Scotland 2-1 at Seaview yesterday.
Goals from Alberto Balde and Peter McKiernan handed Darren Murphy's boys a hard-fought victory in a game that could have swung either way.
It took just six minutes for Balde to open the scoring, cutting inside from the left wing and firing low and hard into the bottom corner from just outside the box.
No more than three minutes later, the visitors were level with an equally impressive strike from midfielder Dylan Forrest beating the goalkeeper from around 30 yards.
But McKiernan settled it in the 33rd minute, racing onto a beautiful pass that dissected the two centre-backs and finishing coolly past the onrushing keeper.
The Ulstermen now turn their attentions to tomorrow's final match against Wales (5pm) at the Bangor Fuels Arena.
Meanwhile, England are through to the 2017 Under-17 World Cup final after beating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final.
Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster twice put England ahead in the first half either side of Wesley's equaliser for Brazil and then sealed the Three Lions' place in the final by adding a third late on.
