Finland sign up to Northern Ireland friendly

By Graham Luney

Northern Ireland fans are still waiting to hear who will become Nigel Worthington’s successor but they have another friendly date to pencil into their calendar.

The Irish FA have confirmed that Finland will play at Windsor Park in a friendly fixture on August 15. Northern Ireland are also scheduled to face Norway at home on February 29 and Holland in Amsterdam on June 2.

Now 88th in the Fifa world rankings, Northern Ireland sit two places behind Finland.

Northern Ireland last played the Finns in August 2006, when Lawrie Sanchez was manager, and won 2-1 in Helsinki.

Keith Rowland’s only goal for Northern Ireland came in a 1–0 win against Finland at Windsor Park in October, 1998.

Worthington quit as Northern Ireland manager at the end of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, with Iain Dowie, Jim Magilton or Michael O'Neill expected to be his successor.

Meanwhile, Stephen Kenny could be unveiled as Shamrock Rovers boss as early as tomorrow once compensation discussions with Derry City are completed.

The Dubliner is preparing to move back to his native city and take the reins in Tallaght.
