France march into semis

By Laure James

UEFA Under-19 Women's Championship title holders France bounced back from an opening day defeat to reach the semi-finals for the second year running with a 1-0 win over England yesterday.

Les Bleuettes face record six-time winners Germany in the knockout phase, who had topped Group A - and beat Northern Ireland 6-0 last night - with a game to spare.

Netherlands and Spain complete the other semi-final pairing, as the Dutch, Group B winners, continue to mirror their male counterparts' success at Euro 2017.

Spain's winner against Scotland came in the 55th minute when midfielder Patricia Guijarro sneaked inside the area and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Rebecca Flaherty.

Pedro López's side beat Netherlands 4-3 at this stage in Slovakia last year.

If either of Thursday's semi-finals is level after extra-time, any penalty shoot-out will take place under the experimental 'ABBA format', also to be trialled in the Carabao Cup.

Teams are also permitted a fourth substitute in extra-time.

Both semi-finals will be played at the National Stadium at Windsor Park. Netherlands v Spain kicks off at 3pm, while Germany v France is at 7pm.
