Gavin Whyte has backed Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis to bounce back from his penalty miss and lead the side through the Euro 2020 play-offs.

The Cardiff City winger felt Michael O’Neill’s side performed well against Ronald Koeman’s Dutch, who dominated possession in the second half at Windsor Park.

“It’s unfortunate, but I thought we were superb tonight. We knew it was going to be a tough game and we weren’t going to get much of the ball, so we had to dig in at time.

“I think our overall performance was testament of how far we’ve come as a team. We’re hard to beat, especially here,” said Whyte who says the sole focus was on the international double header, with Germany up next in Frankfurt on Tuesday night, after O’Neill took the managerial role at Stoke City last week.

“There was no talk about it. It was all about this game and now this game is over, it’s all about Germany. There’s been no talk about clubs or anything.

We’re all a bit gutted about it, but we still have a job to do. Gavin Whyte

The former Crusaders man said his skipper will put his first half penalty miss behind him.

“He’s a strong character. We all miss penalties and it’s part of the game. I’m sure he’ll step up the next time and bury it.”

With a play-off spot already secured before kick-off, Northern Ireland could have been forgiven for not performing against their illustrious opponents.

“We still want to win these games,” said Whyte. “We still want to go out against every team we play and get a win, especially here,” he said.

“We played really well tonight and we’ll carry that into another big game on Tuesday night. It’s going to be another tough one where we’re probably not going to see much of the ball.”
