Holders France taste defeat

Holders France fell to defeat on the opening day of the Uefa Women's U19 Championship against an inspired Netherlands.

Victoria Pelova opened the scoring on 10 minutes at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

The Dutch doubled their lead midway through the first half when Julie Piga deflected Quinty Sabato's free-kick into her own net.

In Group B's other contest, England earned a 2-1 win over Italy at Mourneview Park.

Georgia Allen starred as she netted a second-half double.

A stunning Annamaria Senturini effort halved the deficit late on but England held on.

Elsewhere in Northern Ireland's group, 2011 winners Germany defeated Scotland 3-0 at Windsor Park.

Giulia Gwinn broke the deadlock on 19 minutes before Annalena Rieke headed in Laura Freigang's corner.

Substitute Ereleta Memeti headed a third with 10 minutes to go, but despite the scoreline Scotland put up a valiant defensive display.
